Fertility & Conception for South African Women: Your Complete Guide

Fertility is a deeply personal and often complex aspect of women’s health. Whether you are just beginning to think about conception, actively trying to fall pregnant, or navigating the challenges of infertility, understanding your reproductive health is the first and most empowering step. HealthLab’s Fertility & Conception Hub provides evidence-based, locally relevant guidance for South African women at every stage of their fertility journey.

Fertility Health: The Foundation

Reproductive health begins long before you start trying to conceive. Optimising your fertility health means addressing nutrition (folate, iron, omega-3s and antioxidants are particularly important), maintaining a healthy body weight, managing stress, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, and ensuring underlying conditions like thyroid disease, PCOS and vitamin D deficiency are identified and treated. A preconception check-up with your GP or gynaecologist — ideally 3 to 6 months before you start trying — gives you the best possible foundation.

Fertility Assessment: Understanding Your Picture

A fertility assessment typically includes a hormone panel (AMH, FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, thyroid function), a pelvic ultrasound to assess ovarian reserve and uterine structure, and — when a partner is involved — a semen analysis. These tests provide a snapshot of your reproductive potential and help identify any underlying issues. It is recommended that women under 35 seek assessment after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse; women 35 and older should not wait longer than 6 months.

Fertility Treatments & Assisted Conception

South Africa has a well-developed fertility treatment sector, with internationally accredited clinics offering the full range of assisted reproductive technologies. Ovulation induction with oral medications (clomiphene, letrozole) is first-line for many women with anovulatory cycles. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a less invasive option suitable for certain diagnoses. In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) — where eggs are retrieved, fertilised in the laboratory and transferred to the uterus — is the most effective treatment for most causes of infertility. Success rates, costs and what to expect from the South African IVF journey are all covered in our Fertility Treatments section.
