Mental Health Finding Therapist

Finding a Therapist in SA

Therapy works. But for many South African men, finding the right therapist feels like navigating a maze. Here's a practical guide.

Types of Mental Health Professionals

Understanding who does what:

  • Psychologist (HPCSA-registered): trained in assessment and therapy, cannot prescribe medication. Sessions typically R800–R1500 each.
  • Psychiatrist (medical doctor): can diagnose and prescribe medication, may also do therapy.
  • Counsellor/Social worker: lower cost, helpful for mild-moderate issues and practical support.
  • Psychotherapist: generic term — always check their qualifications.

Finding a Psychologist in SA

Resources:

  • HPCSA online directory: hpcsa.co.za — search registered psychologists by province
  • SADAG referral list: sadag.org
  • PulseZA Professionals Directory
  • Medical aid approved panel (covered sessions vary)
  • Some workplaces offer free EAP sessions

What to Expect in Your First Session

The first session is an assessment — your therapist will ask about your history, current problems and goals. You don't need to share everything immediately. It usually takes 2–3 sessions to know if there's a good fit. If it doesn't feel right, it's okay to try a different therapist.

Affordability

Private psychology sessions are expensive. Options for more affordable care:

  • University psychology clinics offer reduced-rate sessions supervised by qualified staff
  • HPCSA community service psychologists at public clinics
  • Online therapy platforms active in SA: Theraplink, BetterHelp SA
  • EAP through your employer
  • SADAG support groups — free
