Suicide Prevention

South African men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women. This page provides resources, warning signs and how to help someone in crisis.

Warning Signs in Men

Men at risk may:

  • Talk about being a burden to others
  • Withdraw from friends, family and activities they once enjoyed
  • Give away prized possessions
  • Become unusually calm after a period of depression
  • Increase alcohol or drug use
  • Make indirect statements about not wanting to be here

How to Help Someone

If you're concerned about someone:

  • Ask directly: 'Are you thinking about suicide?' — this does not plant the idea
  • Listen without judgment
  • Take them seriously and don't minimise their pain
  • Help them contact a professional or take them to an emergency department
  • Remove access to means if possible (firearms, medications)

If You're Struggling

Suicidal thoughts are a symptom of treatable illness, not a character flaw. Tell someone you trust. Call SADAG. Go to your nearest emergency department. You don't have to face this alone — and it does get better with the right support.
