Healthy Ageing Preventative Health

Preventative Health

Screenings, vaccinations and healthy habits for staying well as you age.

Screenings by Age

50s: annual mammogram, PAP smear every 3 years, blood pressure annually, cholesterol every 2–3 years, diabetes screening, colonoscopy from 50 (every 10 years), bone density scan from 65 (earlier if high risk). 60s+: add annual hearing and vision checks, shingles vaccine (from 60), pneumonia vaccine (65+).

Vaccinations for Older Adults

Flu vaccine: annually (free for 65+ at public clinics). Pneumococcal vaccine: protects against pneumonia. Shingles vaccine: reduces risk by 90%+. Tdap booster: every 10 years. COVID-19 booster: as recommended. Vaccines prevent serious illness — they're even more important as your immune system ages.

Medication Reviews

Polypharmacy (taking 5+ medications) is common in older adults and increases risk of side effects and interactions. Have your GP or pharmacist review all medications annually — ask: is each still needed? Are there safer alternatives? Can any be stopped? Include supplements and over-the-counter products.

The Annual Check-Up

A yearly wellness visit should include: blood pressure, weight/BMI, medication review, discussion of any new symptoms or concerns, review of family history, and updating screening schedules. Most SA medical aids cover an annual health assessment. Use this time to ask questions and plan your health for the year ahead.
