Understanding stroke risk factors, warning signs and prevention strategies for women.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in SA women. Women have unique risk factors including pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, hormonal contraception (especially in smokers), and hormone therapy. Atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) increases stroke risk more in women than men.
Face: Is one side drooping? Arms: Can they raise both arms? Is one weak? Speech: Is speech slurred or confused? Time: Call 10177 immediately. Other signs: sudden confusion, severe headache, vision problems, dizziness, loss of balance. Every minute of delay kills brain cells.
Control blood pressure (the single most important factor), manage cholesterol and diabetes, quit smoking, limit alcohol, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and treat atrial fibrillation if present. Women with migraines with aura should avoid smoking and oestrogen-containing contraceptives.
Stroke recovery is a journey — rehabilitation includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychological support. SA public hospitals have stroke units in major centres. Support from family, community and stroke support groups is vital. Many stroke survivors regain independence with good rehab.
